REACH
REACH is intended to stop harmful
substances appearing in consumer goods and making their way into
people’s bodies and the environment.
At its heart, REACH is a simple concept. The problem of the
risks to human health and the environment posed by thousands of
unassessed chemicals on the market solved by encouraging
companies to risk assess the chemicals they use.
Outcomes should include a market for chemicals that have been
proved safe, controlsfor risky substances, information transfer through the supply
chain and bans onanything too hazardous to justify its use.
REACH is a classic example of where EU legislation is transposed
in to UK law, and there is little support for industry in its
implementation. |

REACH News
The EU’s new chemical safety regime struggled over its first
hurdle in 2008 and it is limbering up for the next in November
(2010), when full registration of many substances is required.
