Southwest Environmental Limited have been working in the Greater London Area since 2010. We have undertaken Environmental Consultant report writing projects for a broad range of clients within the M25 and outside of it.
London is a heavily populated area, with lots of people living in close proximity to one another, and also in close proximity to industry, and other commercial endeavors. To that end London is a very complex area in which to deliver environmental reports.
Our London office serves areas inside and & outside the M25. The below map shows the location of projects undertaken in 2021. In areas such as Camden, Hackney, Stratford, and Hammersmith, Brixton and Woolwich to name a few. But a number of projects were also undertaken outside of London, in areas such as Slough, Sevenoaks and Tilbury.
The type of work that we undertake in and around London depends on the needs of our clients. This can be varied not only in term of a client's specific requirements but also there seams to be trends in terms of the types of reports that are in demand, so topics trend for short periods, whilst others have remained consistently in demand over the entire time we have been under taking Environmental Consultancy roles in London.
We will just pick 3 examples here, but annually we cover over a dozen
different topics.

Pretty much any development in London, unless is underground, will create overshadowing. So sunlight & daylight report in London are a popular report. However, one thing has remained quite consistent over the years, and that is client's come to us too late. Typically they will have a live planning application and 75% of time they are lucky and the sunlight & daylight assessment reveals no problems. But in 25% of cases a redesign is required, and we could have avoided that if we were engaged earlier.
We have carried out sunlight and daylight assessments for all sorts of projects in London over the years. And we will describe these briefly below:
Air Quality was a hot topic in London for a number of years, but recently we have done very little reporting on this topic. It was at its height around the time of "diesel gate" when many AQOs where being breached, but introduction of clean air zones, and electric vehicles have seen great improvements, meaning that children can live in large areas of London without breathing lung disorders.
There are likely air quality concerns to deal with in London. Although NOx and PM10s are on the decline, we fully anticipate some form of reaction towards other particulates such as micro-plastics in the near future.
Since the the "Merton Rule" back in 2005 (ish) energy efficiency, and by extension carbon efficiency has become an important part for all but the most minor of planning applications.
For many years now we have cosidered the operational footprint of buildings, using calculations such as SAP and BRUKL to model envelopes and try out different heating systems, however more recently we have seen the introduction of LETI and other GLA accounting systems that have expanded upon this.
The latest development in this field is the whole building lifecycle footprint, which is an onerous requirement. But one we are well placed to help with as we have been undertaking carbon footprint work for many years.
Some Environmental Consultants chase big names, or have contracts with local councils, but we find a mix of clients come to us for our services, and we will do our best to accommodate them all.
This is a fairly famous name, and we have worked for them. We undertook carbon foot printing for a new piece of equipment they were trialing.
They are many architectural practices in London, and we work for a dozen different practices in a given year.
Laura was a client of ours some years ago, based in London she was undertaking small residential developments (converting shop to flat etc.) we would provide the same level of service to individuals like Laura, that we would deliver to multi-nationals, which is why Laura took the trouble to tell SWEL that we "are great".
