Image result for wikimedia scrap metalA scrap yard operator near Bristol contacted Southwest Environmental with a view to producing an environmental management system for there permitted operation. The need for the environmental management system came from their environmental permit, administered by the environment agency. The site was situated over sensitive ground water, and as such a robust management system was requested by the EA.

The environmental management system highlight high risk activities such as vehicle fueling, and references operating procedures for that activity, abatement plant (interceptors), and responsible people for maintenance of said plant.

Technical Guidance: Developing a Robust Environmental Management System (EMS)

An Environmental Management System (EMS) is a structured framework designed to help organizations manage their environmental impacts and improve overall performance. Whether following the ISO 14001 standard or a bespoke regulatory framework, a functional EMS is essential for maintaining environmental compliance and demonstrating a commitment to long-term sustainability.

The Core Components of an EMS

A professional EMS is built upon several critical technical pillars that ensure site activities are monitored and controlled. These include:

EMS for Regulatory Permitting

For facilities operating under an Environmental Permit, an EMS is often a mandatory requirement. The Environment Agency (EA) expects to see a system that effectively manages the risks associated with the permitted activity. This is particularly crucial for complex sites, such as those requiring a Bespoke Permit, where site-specific management plans must be integrated into the daily operational workflow.

At SWEL, we provide the technical authority needed to design and implement systems that are both compliant and practical. With over 15 years of industry experience and 900+ projects delivered across the UK, our team (IES/FGS/IAQM accredited) ensures that your EMS supports your business goals. We assist in linking management systems with broader strategies, such as Carbon Strategy development and corporate social responsibility.

Integration with Construction and Planning

Environmental management should begin at the earliest project stages. Data from your Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) serves as an excellent foundation for an operational EMS, ensuring that mitigation measures identified during the planning phase are carried through into long-term facility management. We provide comprehensive Environmental Auditing to verify that your system is delivering the intended environmental outcomes.
